They are man-made versions of the hormone cortisol which is created by the human body in the adrenal glands (two small glands at the top of the kidneys). Taking corticosteroids causes the body to slow down production of, or stop making, cortisol. The body then receives the cortisol it needs from the corticosteroids. Although it is best not to take steroids during pregnancy, it is safer than many drugs and the benefit of treatment may outweigh the risks.

You can make a decision together based on the benefits to you and the possible risks to your baby. This drug can cause inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). • Take prednisolone with food to reduce the chances of stomach problems.
  • Steroids can mask typical responses to infection, including fever.
  • Dexamethasone and prednisolone work quickly, usually within a few days, but full benefits can take months in some cases.

Corticosteroids, or commonly just referred to as steroids, are a common medication used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This information leaflet is designed to answer common questions patients ask about Prednisolone. Further information can be found in the information leaflet supplied by the manufacturer or from your specialist nurse, doctor or pharmacist.

Steroid warning cards

In these conditions, steroids are given to dampen the overactive system response and stop the destruction of normal tissue. Steroids can also be effective in stopping or slowing the rate of growth of some, but not all, cancers. In addition, at higher doses it can suppress the immune system so is used with caution (or avoided completely) in dogs with viral infections, tuberculosis, or systemic fungal infections. Additionally, taking steroids by mouth suppresses the body’s ability to produce steroids, so children with DMD may need additional steroids in times of stress like severe illnesses or surgery.

Bone thinning (osteoporosis)

If you’ve been taking steroid tablets for more than a few weeks, you usually need to reduce your dose gradually. Stopping suddenly can cause your adrenal gland, which makes important hormones for the body, to stop working. But sometimes they can cause unpleasant side effects, such as an increased appetite, mood changes and difficulty sleeping. Side effects of oral steroids are dose related or more pronounced in patients with co-morbidities (e.g. diabetes, osteopenia -see below) or COPD.

It is important to note that different people will have very different responses to steroids. The key to successful steroid management is to be aware of the potential side effects and work to prevent, or reduce, them where possible. Reduction in steroid dose may be necessary if side effects are unmanageable or intolerable (Figure 4). If this is unsuccessful, changing to another type of steroid or dosing regimen is necessary before abandoning treatment altogether.

You should contact your advice line urgently if you think you have an infection. Please read this information sheet from GOSH alongside the patient information where can i buy steroids over the counter leaflet (PIL) provided by the manufacturer. If you’re having an operation, you might need to stop your steroids. If you’re using a steroid cream it’s fine to have vaccinations, but you’ll need to tell the person giving you the injection to avoid the area being treated with the cream. Steroids can weaken bones, which can lead to a condition known as osteoporosis.

Firstly, I reassure them that we always prescribe the lowest dose needed for their condition. Most steroid inhalers have low doses of steroid medicine in them anyway. If you have high-dose steroids, or steroids and other cancer treatments at the same time, you may have an increased risk of infection. This can include a cough, a sore throat or a temperature above 37.5°C.
